Vaping vs. Smoking
Is vaping electronic cigarettes bad for you? We take a look at vaping vs. smoking.
If you are asking this question, you have probably heard about buzz surrounding electronic cigarettes. If you’re interested in learning the facts about vaping, you have come to the right place. We will examine the benefits of smoking vs vaping below, but first we will answer the question: What is Vaping?
What is Vaping?
Vaporizers, also known as electronic cigarettes, e-cigs, vapes were made to replace cigarettes. Vaping is designed to deliver an aerosol, known as vapor, to the end-user. Vapers can choose between vape juices that contain nicotine and those that do not.
We all know that cigarettes work by burning tobacco thereby delivering nicotine to the smokers. Electronic cigarettes, on the other hand, work by heating up a liquid, commonly known as e-liquid, e-juice, or vape juice. By heating up the liquid, electronic cigarettes create a vapor, often containing nicotine, vapers inhale through a mouthpiece located on the vaping device.
Quick Vape Facts You Should Know
While vaping is relatively new, having been around for almost a decade, there’s a lot the public does not know about it. One of the most important issues revolves around vaping vs. smoking traditional cigarettes.
Until recently, there wasn’t much evidence to debate whether switching from smoking to vaping helps ones lungs and improves ones health. However, some researchers have researched vaping and have come to the conclusion that vaping causes much less harm than smoking analog cigarettes.
According to the Royal College of Physicians, the harm caused by vaping is unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm caused by smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes. Additionally, they state that more advances in electronic cigarettes will further reduce the long-term publish health impacts.
Chemicals in Vaping vs. Chemicals in Smoking
As we all know, smoking involves burning shredded tobacco leaves to deliver nicotine to the smoker. The process of burning produces thousands of chemicals that smokers inhale along with nicotine. Many of the toxic chemicals produced are strongly linked to causing cancer.
Chemicals in Cigarette Smoke
According to Cancer.org, here is a list of the carcinogenic chemicals that are typically found in cigarettes:
- Hydrogen Cyanide
- Carbon Monoxide
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
These substance can cause caners, heart disease, lung disease, and a variety of other serious health issues. According to Cancer.org, these problems are caused from burning tobacco leaves themselves, not from the nicotine itself and elements that are in a cigarette. Burning tobacco leaves causes combustion, which creates the list of carcinogens mentioned above.
Chemicals in Electronic Cigarette Vapor
The most beneficial aspect of vaping is that combustion does not occur, instead the heating element in electronic cigarettes, heats the vape juice to the point were it vaporizers, not combustion. So, this removes the carcinogens that are produced by combustion.
There are many studies that support the finding that the number of carcinogens produced by vaping are significantly less than those produced by smoking.
The following is a list of the chemicals found in electronic cigarette vapor:
- Propylene Glycol
- Vegetable Glycerin
There some other chemicals in vapor, but these depend on the flavoring found in your vape juice. That said, the flavoring used in your e-liquid are food grade and are typically safe for human consumption.
Having said that, many have made the argument that food grade flavorings are designed for ingestion and not to be vaporized then inhaled. When it comes to inhaling these flavorings, we don’t know the long term effects.
Most flavorings are made by mixing several chemical compounds and some of them might be better for our lungs than others. Studies in this area will greatly help vapers and manufacturers make better choices for the flavors they use in e-cigarettes.
In the short term, most vapers don’t experience adverse effects. Just make sure that you purchase vape juice from premium vape juice manufacturers, such as Naked and 7 Daze. These companies do their best to use the safest ingredients when making their vape juice.
Is vaping bad for your lungs?
We all know that smoking cigarettes is 100% bad for your lungs. Long-term smokers inhale tons of burning tobacco smoke that leads to lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and a variety of other deadly diseases, including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease).
Cigarette smoke contains thousand of carcinogens, many of which are strongly linked to causing cancer. Also, what smokers don’t know is that very small particles of burnt tobacco and cigarette paper get buried deep in the lung tissue.
As stated earlier, vaping does not produce a fraction of the carcinogens that cigarettes produce, making vaping less harmful than smoking cigarettes. Also, since we are not burning vape juice, combustion is absent, so there is no tar or carbon monoxide being produced. This proves that vaping, in some aspects, is a much better, healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes.
Vaping and Oral Health
It is well known that smoking causes many oral health problems and diseases, such as mouth cancer, throat cancer, and esophageal cancer. In some cases, smoking can also cause dental diseases and gum disease. Cigarette smoke is also able to kill beneficial bacteria in our mouths, altering the bacteria makeup in our mouth.
Currently, we can’t confirm or deny that vaping causes the same diseases and disorders that smoking causes because we don’t have enough information. Studies in this area will help us understand any potential impacts that vaping has on oral health.
Does Vaping Cause Cancer?
According to Cancer.gov, cancer occurs when our cells mutate and begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissue. Most people know that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, but they forget that it can cause many types of other cancers.
Cancer forms not only in the lungs which have direct contact with smoke, it can also form in the blood and other organs. This is so because the blood transports the byproducts of smoking cigarettes to our entire body. The CDC states that smoking can cause cancer in the following areas:
- Bloody (Acute Myeloid Leukemia)
- Colon & Rectum
- Mouth & Throat
Now, to answer the question: whether vaping causes cancer? According to Tobacco Journal’s research of electronic cigarettes and whether they cayse cancer, they found that vaping has a much less chance of causing cancer than not only smoking cigarettes, but also nicotine patches.
The researchers stated that e-cigarette vapor have less than 1% of the ability of cigarette smoke to produce cancer. In other words, the chance that e-cigarettes will cause cancer is extremely low when compared to smoking cigarettes.
They note however, that they found e-cigarettes and vapes to release more toxic chemicals when “excessive power” is sent to the vaporizer’s heating element. So, as long as you vape at normal temperatures, you should be reducing your risk of cancer.
Many other researchers have come to similar conclusions after studying vapor emitted from electronic cigarettes.
Nicotine on its own, whether found in traditional cigarettes or in e-cigarettes, or other nicotine products, has not been shown to produce cancer.
We are sure that cigarettes have the ability to destroy the body, damaging everything from your lungs to your prostate. However, we do not have any evidence that vaping has the same impact on the body other than nicotine dependency. That said, nicotine is not the issue, the chemicals produced by burning tobacco are the cause of the diseases we covered. So, vaping is a viable, healthier alternative to smoking due to the absence of combustion.
